Volunteer FAQs

Q: Can I volunteer to meet birds to see who might be a good fit for me?

A: This is definitely an option, however we still need you to go through the adoption process. We are extremely careful about where the birds go. There are many things to consider when adopting a bird. For more information about adoption please visit our website.

Q: Can I volunteer to see if a bird would be a good fit for my life and to learn more about birds and training?

A: YES! This is a great start to see if you would like to add a feathered member to your family. Volunteering is a great way to learn about bird care and also to learn about training.

Q: As a volunteer, do I get to handle and spend time with the birds?

A: Yes, but we also need to make sure all the birds get time and socialization. We try to not get them too bonded with us since we need them to bond to their new families. But they all need socialization and training time.

Q: Can I bring treats for the birds?

A: Yes, that would be great! But be sure to clear all the treats you bring by Lisa or Jo. We make sure that all the treats are good for them.

Approved Snacks and Treats for the Birds

  • Washed grapes

  • Washed and sliced Mango, Papaya, Cantaloupe

  • Washed Pomegranate

  • Washed Snap Peas, Carrots, Broccoli, Spinach Greens

  • Mandarin Oranges, Cuties

Q: Can I bring my children when volunteering?

We love children! However we can’t guarantee their safety here. When volunteering, we politely ask that you don’t bring your children during your agreed up shifts.

Volunteer Application

What is your age?

What are your intentions with volunteering? Are you available all the time, sometimes, or just when you feel like volunteering?

I understand that by volunteering, I am not promised approval for a bird. Everyone who would like to adopt a bird, MUST go through the adoption process, including our volunteers. By volunteering, you are not guaranteed approval.

When working with or volunteering to work with any animal, you will encounter animals that can be considered dangerous, and we may be moving cages around and this can cause injury. You will be required to sign a liability waiver, waiving your right to sue us for any reason. We DO try to keep you safe and uninjured, but anything with a mouth can bite. And working with parrots is like working with toddlers with pliers!

When volunteering, we ask that you leave your children at home, as we can’t guarantee their safety here.

We rely on our scheduled volunteers. When you ask to be placed on our volunteer schedule, we do not schedule others to do the tasks that you are scheduled to do. When you commit to volunteering, we need you to do the tasks that you agreed to do. If you agree and understand, please sign and date below. I agree to follow through with my commitment to be present and do the tasks I agreed to do.
